The competition was held earlier among non-Arabic speaking students, the m.akhbarelyom.com website reported.

Those contributing to the center’s Quran memorization programs were also honored at the ceremony.

The programs are held under the supervision of Abdul Hamid Mutawalli, president of the Supreme Council of Imams and Islamic Affairs in the Caribbean and Latin America.

According to Mutawalli, the Quran memorization competition for non-Arabs started at the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan and concluded a few days ago.

He said 59 male and female students won different categories of the contest and were awarded at the ceremony.

Brazil is a big country in South America. Islam is practiced by over 200,000 Brazilians—making it the largest Muslim community in Latin America.

Most of the country’s Muslims are Arab in origin, with smaller but growing numbers of Brazilian converts. The Brazilian Muslim community includes both Sunni and Shia Muslims.
